Movember Is Almost Upon Us!!!

29 10 2010

Myself and part of team Cleveland's Mo Bros... Join us

In a few days, it will be November 1st. Not a particularly important day (my apologies if you are born on this day, cause I know it’s important to you!), but it does mark the beginning of Movember. That’s the month for prostate cancer awareness.  In it, guys (dubbed Mo Bros) grow Mo’s (mustaches) and get people to pledge money through the month (much like women do for the Susan G Komen Foundation).  Starting November 1st, the men will strip down to being clean shaven, and grow a mustache for the entire month of November. No goatees, no soul patches…. just the ‘stache. Gets as creative as you’d like it to be.

This MOvement got started down under in Australia back in 2003 and has grown and grown!  The proceeds from the money raised goes to support the Movember Foundation, Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong Foundation and the Prostrate Cancer Foundation. You can all do your part. Just donate!

My team is called Cleveland’s Mo Bros and I couldn’t be prouder. Between the 12 or so of us who participated in 2009, we raised just shy of $5,000…. good enough for 98th place in the top 100 teams in AMERICA.  So I guess you could say we did ok, lol. This year we’re looking to top that and we need your help. Not only your monetary support, but we also need you spreading the word. This event grows every year and i’m sure this can be be the best one yet….

About Movember (from movember.com)

The Mo, slang for moustache, and November come together each year for Movember.

Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1st  clean-shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month.  The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men.  Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days.

The idea for Movember was sparked in 2003 over a few beers in Melbourne, Australia.  The plan was simple – to bring the moustache back as a bit of a joke and do something for men’s health. No money was raised in 2003, but the guys behind the Mo realized the potential a moustache had in generating conversations about men’s health.  Inspired by the women around them and all they had done for breast cancer, the Mo Bros set themselves on a course to create a global men’s health movement.

In 2004 the campaign evolved and focused on raising awareness and funds for the number one cancer affecting men – prostate cancer. 432 Mo Bros joined the movement that year, raising $55,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia – representing the single largest donation they had ever received.

The Movember moustache has continued to grow year after year, expanding to the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Spain, South Africa, the Netherlands and Finland.

In 2009, global participation of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas climbed to 255,755, with over one million donors raising $42 Million US equivalent dollars for Movember’s global beneficiary partners.

Relapse 2010 Promo Video

20 07 2010

Relapse

I’m always telling people about this party that we do at Velvet Dog, on the roof. I get a lot of funny looks, which is pretty strange considering every weekend there is a line all the way to Blue Point to get up there. Why would you NOT wanna party there during the day when the sun is out, the music is bangin, the drinks are cold, and water is just right? I dunno….

So to show people just what goes on, I made a little video to show you some of the things that have happened so far. People are getting iced, there’s water gun fights on a regular basis, and the music is….. eclectic to say the least.  In an average day you’ll hear Smokey Robinson rubbing shoulders with Katy Perry, Afrojack and Michael Jackson paired as partners, Michael McDonald before Major Lazer, and so on and so on. There’s always a slew of guest djs including myself, DJ Yishai, DJs Jon Doe and Thaiger of Nova Soulz, DJ Kosherkuts, and special guest resident, DJ E-V.

If you wanna lay out, there’s lawn chairs on our “sun deck” that will suffice, and if you’re hungry Sushi Rock will deliver to you upstairs. It’s really a sight to behold. Bloody Mary’s are a staple, and the make your own bloody mary bar definitely has your back.  So without further ado…. here’s the video.  I know you hear us on the radio (96.5/100.7), and after seeing this, I hope you’ll come out on Sundays from 2-8pm and see what the fuss is about.  I mean, how many times can you go to Shooters or Whiskey Island this summer anyways…. complaining the whole time. Stop being a lemming and come to the place that only has you in mind.  Consider this your personal invitation.

New Cuyahoga Now Event Monday

15 10 2009

Hey everybody…. For those of you who know me, you know I never bring stuff to you that’s b.s.  I’ve always been a straight shooter and been calling a spade a spade ’81.  So here’s an event that I’m proud to say that I’m co-hosting.  Go to the website and educate yourself about Issues 5 and 6.

To over simplify it…. Issue 5 will keep our existing 3 person commissioner system and some outside party will do a study to see how we can fix that.  But of course it’ll cost money and happen at some point down the line.  Worst case scenario nothing will change and we will have wasted that almighty dollar.

Issue 6 will scrap what we have now and institute a single executive who takes the fall when the shit hits the fan.  Advising him will be a council who represents the constituents of Cuyahoga County.  That’ll happen like yesterday (in political terms of course, lol).

Please RSVP to robyn.smyers@sbcglobal.net

So some say Issue 5 is bunk because it’s something done in the future and nothing will happen now, plus there’s the chance that nothing will get fixed and we’ll be doing this again next election.

Some say Issue 6 is bunk because it will prob not fix everything and we won’t be able to elect our own coroner for example.  It puts our fate in the hands of officials that the single executive will be appointing.

I say 6 because the blame is easier to pin.  As it stands now, Hagan and Dimora are both being accused of some serious quid pro quo and ethics charges, so the system is already flawed.  I’m not on the level that I need to pick a sheriff or a coroner or a auditor or whomever those random people on the ballot are.  I feel that the experts should stick to what they are good at.  If I elect someone to a high position, I base that off of character, time spent in office, intellectual capacity, and choice of boxers, briefs, or commando (j/k on that last part).  So if I elect them, I feel that they will take the necessary council to elect the right person for the job.  I am not capable of being that council, lol.  Plus that would be change RIGHT NOW.  It may not be the end all be all, but at least we tried, and can fix it from there.  But everyone knows it isn’t working now, so we have to try SOMETHING.

Please RSVP to robyn.smyers@sbcglobal.net

Hence why I am- for the second time- co-chairing something political (cringe) because just like needing Josh Mandel in Columbus, Cuyahoga County needs change NOW! I hope you’ll agree with me and come out on Monday (see below).

Please RSVP to robyn.smyers@sbcglobal.net.  Thanks!

Meet Lebron James This Friday!!!

15 09 2009

Shooting Stars

Hey LBJ fans! You can meet your hero this Friday, Sept. 18th at Borders in Crocker Park (Westlake). He’ll be there signing copies of his new book, “Shooting Stars,” I’m assuming. Starts at 7pm, so I bet you should get there a couple hours early to stand in line. I got the info yesterday via Borders.com, so I don’t know how many people know about it.
